Year End Bookkeeping Checklist

What to Review Before December

October is when most business owners begin thinking about the holidays.

It is also when you should begin thinking about year end bookkeeping.

Waiting until January to clean up your books creates unnecessary stress.

Here is what to review now so year end feels structured instead of rushed.

Reconcile Every Account

Ensure all bank accounts and credit cards are reconciled through September.

Reconciliation confirms:

• Transactions are complete • Balances match statements • Errors are caught early

Unreconciled accounts create inaccurate financial reports and unnecessary stress.

Review Uncategorized Transactions

Uncategorized expenses distort your profit and loss statement.

Run your reports and confirm:

• Expenses are properly classified • Income is recorded accurately • No large unknown categories exist

Accurate numbers matter for tax planning and confident decision making.

Confirm Contractor Information

Before January arrives:

• Review vendor totals • Collect missing W9 forms • Verify legal names and addresses

If 1099 season has felt rushed in the past, this is the time to fix that.

Review Payroll and Liability Accounts

Confirm payroll taxes, retirement contributions, and other liabilities are accurate and up to date.

Payroll errors compound quickly if ignored.

Schedule a Financial Review

Year end should not be reactive.

This is the ideal time to review:

• Profit trends • Cash flow patterns • Estimated taxes • Strategic purchases

Clean bookkeeping does more than help your tax preparer. It reduces stress and supports stronger decisions.

If you are feeling behind or unsure where your numbers stand, addressing it now prevents January panic.

From Chaos to Confidence starts with preparation.

I’m Stephanie, accountant extraordinaire — and at MSW Accounting, we actually like bookkeeping so you don’t have to. I’m so glad you found your way here. Our team helps business owners move from chaos to confidence with their books because, let’s be honest, “winging it” isn’t a strategy. Our goal is to take the stress out of bookkeeping and show how clear numbers can lead to smarter decisions and stronger growth. If money management has ever felt overwhelming, you’re not alone. This is where you move from guesswork to growth (and finally retire that shoebox full of receipts).
